Trend #2: Moving From Dark To Light

Closets are moving away from the darker tones and shifting into clean, light tones of white and off white. Wood grains are becoming very popular as a way to add texture and warmth to your space.

This spring is all about the bling! Want to hang a chandelier in your closet? Go for it! Special touches like these are a wonderful way to add sparkle to your morning routine.

Trend #4: Downsizing

Downsizing is definitely in! More city, less country; more walking, less driving. This may seem foreign to many who are attached to their yards, garages, driveways, basements and attics, but living in a city environment allows more independence and easier social interactions. We frequently help couples that are leaving their house in the suburbs for a place in the city. But you can “downsize” to simplify your life without moving. Clean out the basement and garage, utilize your space better. Nothing says calm like driving into an organized garage or waking up to a beautiful, clean closet.

Dear Home Solutions,

My wife and I would like to send you our comments and thank you for a service performed by your company in our home on February 28, 2013.

We have been living in our Morrison Home for the last 10 years. Our shower door seal and hinge has loosened up over the years and it came out the other day. I tried to fix it myself, but not having the proper tools and product, we decided to contact Home Solutions (the company that installed the original shower door).

After the initial contact was made, your warranty/service department called my wife and arranged for a date and time to come to our home and have a look at the issue on hand.

That was followed up by an email outlining the detail of the appointment and also a picture of the gentleman that would be coming to our home to look after the service. My wife was very impressed with this feature, since in today’s world you never know who will be knocking on your door, especially when she is home alone. It gave her a sense of security knowing what this gentleman would look like before he even knocked on the door.

Rick, the service guy, showed up early, asked questions and then went straight to work. He recognized what the issues were, added new parts and got it all fixed. Then he checked the door to make sure it operated well and he adjusted the hinges and latch. He was very good and it took him no time to get the door back in working order.

Thank you so much for getting this problem fixed. It is nice to see that your product, even after all these years, is working well and can be fixed, and that replacement parts are still available, rather than getting the whole door replaced.

Our experience with Home Solutions has been great and we would recommend your company to anyone who is looking for great products and service.

In this Ask and Expert post, we asked Laurie Robertson, design consultant with Simple Spaces, on how we can utilize our closets for storage and protection.

Q: Everyone has different a style of wardrobe, therefore everyone has different closet needs. What options do you recommend?

A: A BLiSS closet is customized to accommodate a wide variety of clothes, footwear and accessories. When we design a closet, it’s vital to know how a client prefers to store their clothing, as this will help us make sure we have the proper amount of each type of storage. Some people prefer to hang everything, while others would rather fold many items like sweaters, pants or t-shirts. If a client likes to fold but prefers things neat and tidy we can easily add doors or drawers to shelving towers to help minimize the clutter. The chrome pullout baskets, which come in three sizes, are a great option that functions like drawers but allow you to see the contents without opening them. Because every closet we do is completely custom-made, we can design the system around the client’s needs and the space we have to work with.

Q: What accessories does BLiSS offer to store valuable and/or delicate items?

A: This high-end line offers many different pullout accessories, which are mounted directly on the units. These are made specifically to hang ties, belts or scarves and serves to keep these sometimes-awkward items neat and organized. We also offer a pull out valet rod to help you put together that fabulous outfit for a special occasion. Also, the velvet-lined jewellery organizers fit perfectly in the smaller drawers and come in designs to meet the needs of both women and men.

Q: How do these different storage options help lengthen the life of your wardrobe?

A: Clothing experts always recommend folding sweaters and knit items versus hanging them to maintain its shape, while keeping them in drawers or behind doors will keep them clean and dust-free. With a place for everything and everything in its place, delicate items like jewellery and shoes will not get tangled or jumbled, together preventing damage to our favourite items.

Q: Are you seeing any storage trends?

A: People are moving away from having a lot of bedroom furniture, and more towards a minimalist style to maximize space. For example, drawer towers replace the need for a separate dresser, and keep everything in one place. Personally, I was always frustrated with belts that never rolled properly or hung neatly on a hanger. The pullout belt rack allows them to hang full length and keeps them tangle free. A good location keeps them hidden away most of the time but very accessible as you can easily pull them out to view the selection when needed.

Q: What’s the most popular arrangement?

A: Most clients like to feature a nice drawer tower for each occupant with a large section of double hanging and smaller section on full-length hanging. I usually recommend an open shelving tower, which comes with adjustable shelves to accommodate different sized items. This can be used for folded sweaters or pants, purses or even extra bedroom linens. This could also be fitted with angled shoe shelves finished with a nice chrome fence.

We got a bit “Shelf-ish” with our shelf manufacturing space!

In the last couple months, Homes Solutions and Simple Spaces have grown a ton—especially in the shelf department. We’ve added an additional 10,000 square feet of warehouse space dedicated to manufacturing shelves.

What do we do with all this space? In order to make things Simple for you, we have a few first steps to cover here at the warehouse. Since we are completely Alberta-made, we do most of the custom work here in Calgary. Whether it’s wire or wood, our two main cutting machines cut each piece to perfectly fit your home.

The wood CNC machine cuts the specific shapes and sizes, using the information and measurements for your closet and space. Our other machine, the Edgebander, finishes the sides to perfection!

A semi-trailer arrives every 10 days, full of wire shelving, keeping us hopping and our machines moving.
